Frequently Asked Questions
- Which is the better lights Hella, Lightforce or IPF?
- They all have their strong point and they are all different, the Hellas have the best reflector but are not waterproof like the IPF's. The Lightforce is light weight but the Hellas will out shine them. It all comes down to what sort of driving you are doing, if you plan to do lots of creek or river crossings go with the IPF, if you are doing lots of corrugated roads go for the Lightforce and if you are doing county highway driving and want the best vision go for the Hellas as the spread beam is the best around.
- I have seen a 70 or 80W HID kit available why don't you sell them?
- The 70 or 80W kits are notorious for overheating in the large ballast and are usually just a overclocked 55W ballast and are prone to burning out. We only sell quality products that we have tested and are happy that they will last the distance.
- What temperature globe do you recommend with the kit?
- The 6000K is great for open outback driving as the reflective quality is very high so it is good for seeing animals. The 4300K is better suited to coastal driving and the occasional outback drive the reflective quality is high but animals are not as see able as the 6000K. The 6000k will be very harsh on your eyes you when you go past big road sign but the 4300K is not a harsh on the reflection off the road signs. So the answer to your question is depending on what type of driving you do most will determine to temp of the bulbs you need.
- Are your ballasts digital?
- Yes all our ballast are digital and come with a 18 month warranty against faulty manufacturing.
- What are the benefits of HID?
- 3 to 4 times the brightness of a 55W halogen bulb, 5 times longer bulb life (more than 3000 hours), often outlasting the life of the vehicle, Extremely durable: Vibration-resistant, Water-resistant bulb, No filament to burn out, More visibility, More safety for you and others, More efficient in converting energy into light, consumes less energy.
- Is there any drilling or modification to the housing of my Rallye 4000's?
- No there is no modification to the housing at all, we use the existing plugs drilled out slightly to fit the thicker HID wires through and that way the light is back to original.
- Do you have to drill a hole in my XGT's to get the wires out?
- No you don't with our kit we remove the Breather and use that hole to run the wires through, other will tell you that the breather is important to the waterproofing of the light. If you follow the instructions that come with the kit the water cannot get into the light in the first place so why does it need a breather
- What does HID stand for?
- HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. It refers to lighting technology that relies on an electrical charge to ignite xenon gas contained in a sealed bulb. One great advantage of HID Lighting is that unlike a Halogen bulb which has filament which can burn out in as little as 250 hours, HID bulbs are gas filled capsules that are rated for a life of 3000-4000 hours. Another is the fact that they use only 35 watts of electricity. They shine brighter with less power.
- What are Lumens (Lm)?
- The international unit (SI) of luminous flux (quantity of lights). For example, a dinner candle produces about 12 lumens and a standard 60-watt incandescent bulb produces 830 lumens and standard 55-watt halogen bulb produces between 800 to 1200 lumens depending on the quality and make. Omega Colour (K) and Lumen (lm)
3500K Gold Yellow 3,600 (lm) 4300K White/ Yellow 4,400 (lm) 6000K White / Blue 4,200 (lm) 8000K Purple White 2,600 (lm) 10000K Pure Blue 2,400 (lm) - What is Kelvin?
- Many people ask the same questions about the different Kelvin scales associated with HIDs. Kelvin refers to the blackbody characteristics of sunlight. The bulbs are not really 12000K because that will melt not only your housing, but your car and everybody inside. All HIDs are so bright, they are gauged to sunlight and the colour the sun will be at that temperature. At 4000K, which the sun is, the light is yellow/white. As the temperature goes up, so does the wavelength at which the light peaks. At 6500K, you get more of a pure white light and gradually work up to 8300K (blue/white) to 10,000K(pure blue) to about 12000K which is purple. The lumens peak at between 4000K - 6000K, but only a light meter will be able to tell the difference. HIDs are always going to be at least 3 times as bright as any halogen bulb. Colour Temperature is a measurement in Degrees Kelvin that indicates the hue of a specific type of light source. Many people believe the misconception that colour temperature is a rating of the brightness of the bulb or Hid kit. This belief is completely false. The reality of the matter is that the higher the colour temperature, the less useable light output you will obtain. A perfect example would be a black light. This light has a colour temperature of approx 14,000k and has almost no useable light or lumens output. Higher K kits such as 12,000k, 14000k, etc. have been manufactured for individuals that are more concerned about the actual colour output of their lights as opposed to the actual useable light output.
